"I Am Dumb" And Some "Blog Changes"

Okay!

I admit it. I am dumb. I am clever. But I am also dumb.

Even clever people (like me) have many moments where they appear slow, confused or simply dumb.

I remember, when I used to work for a supermarket, that I was once asked if I would like to try Brussel's Pate. I thought, "Yeah, sure!"

I looked at it, wasn't too sure, but was brave and put a blob in my mouth.

I immediately started to dry wretch. The girl at the deli counter was mortified, and was saying over and over, "What's wrong? What's wrong?"

As I scraped it off my tongue, I told her it tasted like meat. She replied that it was meat.

I thought, for some reason, that Brussel's Pate was, and this is true, smashed up brussel sprouts. I had no reason to think otherwise.

Did you ever see the pre-packed salad in shops, called "Alfresco"?

Well, one morning I came downstairs, and couldn't see the dogs. I asked Sam where they were. He replied he had given them their breakfast Alfresco. So of course, my natural reaction was to ask why he thought giving dogs salad with their breakfast was a good idea.

He had to slowly explain to me that Alfresco actually meant eating outside.

This isn't surprising when you are aware that I was raised by a woman who also fails to think things through properly. For example, there was, when I was a young boy, a blackout.

I remember my mum and dad speaking thus -

Dad - Oh, that's the power out.

Mum - A blackout?

Dad - Yes! Just what we could do without.

Mum - Oh, well, you will just have to put up with it. We will just have to watch the TV in the dark.

There were a few moments, quite a few, before my dad had to explain why, when there was a blackout, they couldn't watch TV, at all.

But people in general are not very bright at times. Today we went out for a lovely meal in (yeah, you guessed it!) China Town.

Our meal was interrupted for a moment as three women almost broke into an out and out fight. Over what? Over who was paying the bill!

Two women actually had the third woman pinned to a chair at one point.

Oh my!

So anyway, today I feel dumb. I can't work with HTML. This is one example of a programming language, the simplest one probably, and I can't do it. I just can't do it.

Sure, I can look at code, copy and paste it, play around with what works and what looks good.

But I can't write good code.

I thought I could maybe do a short course on programming, but that seems like over-kill for the small changes I want to make to my blog.

Blogger is pretty good though. There are quite a few widgets and "hacks" available for blogger blogs that help enhance people's writing. These widgets are easy to install and to tweak. But sometimes I want to do more.

Wordpress
seems to be more popular from what I have read in reviews online. It seems to have more potential for "tweaking" and enhancing blogs through plug-ins and snippets of code here and there.

For my requirements, I would say Blogger and Wordpress are pretty evenly matched. If you are drawn to Wordpress, though, I would advise you spend some time getting to know what HTML and Javascript looks like and how to apply such code to your blog template and infrastructure.

So yes, you may have noticed a few changes to my blog lately. I have placed some pictures of myself, my partner, our dogs back in Scotland and our cats here in Oz, at the top of the blog.

I have also recently been dabbling with Blogger's "pages" extension. There is a photo page of myself and Sam, and a page for contact information. I am also working on a disclaimer page as well. I hope to have that up soon. Links to these pages are placed on the side-bar, near the top.

Today I also added a "visitor counter" at the bottom of the blog. This is more for fun than anything else, and I am sure people reading my blog would like to know how many others visit.

I won't make many more changes. I would just like to make some improvements where I can.

If anyone reading this has any good ideas for improving my blog, or if you want to share what you have added and tweaked on your own blog, then leave a comment.

Thank you.

It would be nice hear your ideas.

I think your changes so far are great.

When I visit blogs, I do like to see their blogroll, because it's a great way to find new blogs for my reading list. It's really easy to do too.

Ahhhhh....

Thanks Kelly. You have a great point. I like seeing other people's too.

Will put together my blogroll this coming week.

Thank you.

And I have to say again, I think your blog design is fantastic.

Very clever.

i'm number 35 on your new counter. I am going to exit and enter 100 more times to get the number up there...JUST KIDDING!

Love the new changes. And I love your Mum...she sounds awesome!

I stick with the minimum on my blog. I'm not so tech savvy! LOL.

Hey Momma, you and my mum would probably get on really well.

But I don't need two mum's!

Evil Twin's Wife, sometimes less is more... ;-)

I always think a tag/label cloud is good... It gives people an idea what they can expect, not to mention a chance to click into specific subjects.

Hi Matthew.

I have one on the side-bar. It looks Okay, but is a basic blogger widget.

I have seen some really fancy label clouds, some that rotate etc.

I tried to insert code that did that, but wouldn't work. Might try again in a few days when I have more time.

Star, I laughed so hard reading the first part of your blog that my cat got up and ran. Seriously, dude. Thanks. I needed that.

You are NOT dumb and hey, I woulda thought Brussel's somethingoranother would be made from the sprouts, too. Thanks for the heads-up, you may've spared me future mortification. Isn't it fun, though, to be able to laugh at ourselves...and give other people the opportunity to laugh with us. You rock!

BTW, you have an award over at Postman's blog...in case you didn't know. Go check it out!

I'm afraid I can't help you out here, much. I'm hopeless with HTML. I hung out with a lot of computer nerds, but didn't listen hard enough, it seems.

I like the thumbnails up at the top of the page now, they lend a bit of colorfulness.

Brussel's Pate, eh? I read it and immediately thought "Brussels sprouts." Natural inclination. You got trapped there, friend.

I have left you an award at my blog. You might have to scroll down a bit, but it's there. "From Me To You." Congratulations. Keep the good times rolling, Star Child.

Rebel, I love helping people laugh.

But your poor cat...

;-)

Postman, thank you for my award. I will head over and have a look.

Very kind of you.

I like the differences among blogs...so I'm not one for making recommendations.

As for the rest...I think it's all left/right hemisphere stuff.

Thanks Christopher. So our brains might just be off balance at times?

Thanks Bunny, so it wasn't just me being daft then?

You guys have a great weekend too.

Have fun and stay safe!

Hello! I came through to you, cant' quite remember how. I do like this post here.

I wish more bloggers would post on what has worked with blogger and what hasn't.

This post was interesting, and I'd have to say I enjoy your people counter at the bottom. Lots of fun.

And I think your "about me" is the sweetest, most sincere page I've read on a person yet.

Very nice to meet you!.

Empress, that is such a cool comment. Thank you.

I have done more changes since. I suppose that is the nature of something like a blog, fluid and ever evolving.

In the last 2 months my blog has changed so much. But for the better, I hope.

I love that I have a Favicon, and I am pleased with the page tabs at the top of my blog now. It all just takes a little bit of code here and there.
