A Week Of Night Shift Is A Week Out Of Time

I was night shift last week. Five shifts, 10.5 hours each night, but I survived. In fact, it was a good week. It went by really quickly.

When I have done night shifts in the past I always felt "out of the loop", somehow standing apart from society. It wasn't any different this time. But I think it is quite pleasant to step back from "normal" living. A change of routine is as good as a rest, as they say.

It wouldn't be a good idea to do too many night shifts, though. It is linked with many health problems, physical, emotional and physical. Some people who work such shift patterns find it interferes with relationships, and may find themselves isolated from friends and family. Anything from headaches to cancer have been linked with the disturbance of circadian rhythms.

So I missed a few things last week.

In New Zealand, a judge deemed odd names a social handicap, after making a 9 year old girl a ward of the court, so she could change her name. What was her name?

Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii

That is what her name was. It goes a bit further than being a bit unusual, or unique.

New Zealand does not allow babies to be given names that would offend, or are more than 100 hundred characters long. However, names such as -

Number 16 Bus Shelter, Violence and Midnight Chardonnay

were allowed. Go figure!

What will Number 16 Bus Shelter's future job prospects be? Officer Bus Shelter? Dr Bus Shelter? Doesn't quite have that ring to it. There is a lot to be said for having a name like "David".

Then, in America, a pair had named one of their children Adolf Hitler. They have 3 kids, all with Nazi-derived names. Adolf Hitler Campbell is 3 years old. A shop had refused to make a birthday cake for Adolf, with his name on it. The situation progressed and the children have been taken into care, after concerns with their welfare had been raised.

(Not Adolf Hitler Campbell, just a photo I found on the internet)

They clearly have sympathies with Nazi philosophies. They had also requested a swastika to be included in the cake decoration. I feel so sorry for Adolf Hitler Campbell. If he keeps his name, he will be judged by all who meet him. Which in itself is silly, when you think about it. Why can't people be called Adolf? But I just "feel" people can't share that name. It is almost a synonym for evil.

And then, today, I saw this video -

The woman, in Toledo, Ohio, had been told she couldn't have McChicken Nuggets, and proceeded to go completely McMad. She struck staff and smashed the drive thru window.

Why she couldn't just have ordered something else, I don't know.

The woman, Melodi Dushane, 25, was ordered to pay $1500 (US), and was sentenced to 60 days in jail. She is also on probation for 3 years. All over McChicken Nuggets. Yikes.

We live in a very weird world.

Well, when I ask for no ice in my coke, next time I visit McDonalds, and they give me it anyway....

They will be taking their lives in their hands....

(That's a joke!)

Shift work is a bollix! I did 3-cycle (days, nights, evenings) for 13 long long years! 'Nights' was definitely the worst, starting midnight Sunday. There were 8 of us on that shift (we made computer disks in Verbatim) each one as miserable as the next, including meself!) And yes, it's amazing the news ya'd miss!

As for names, I grew up in an area where people tended to call their kids after TV characters! We even had a Pocahontas McCarthy! (I recently heard a young mum telling her friend that she was thinking of having her new baby christened 'Lady Gaga O'Brien'!)

What a world! :¬)
