Last night was the one and only show on this current tour that Kylie is going to perform her Aphrodite show in Adelaide.
And it was superb!
I saw Kylie in concert maybe 7 or 8 eight years ago in London at the Apollo Theatre, at her “money can’t buy” promotional show for her Body Language album. Sam had won tickets through a radio competition! I still remember that day. We were standing in the car park of our local IKEA. Sam was on the phone, answering questions and the radio presenter made it sound, as they do, as if a woman on the other line had won…She started screaming and then the presenter told her unfortunately she hadn’t won, but that Sam had…So it was our turn to start screaming!
Sam and I haven’t been very well this last week, having caught some sort of bug and spending a few days feeling very sorry for ourselves. But there’s nothing to make you feel better than seeing Kylie live (and there is no way I’m spending $300 to not even go!).
Gypsy and The Cat were the band supporting Kylie. I hadn’t heard of them before. Support bands, I find, are a bit hit and miss. For example, when we went to see Bruno Mars in April, his support band was awful (he was FAB though). I’m glad to say Gypsy and The cat was definitely a HIT. They were great. I have now even connected with them on Twitter! Look at me, I’m hip!
When Kylie finally appeared, it was almost like a spiritual experience. The light show, stage theatrics, dancers and use of music and some video footage on huge screens as a backdrop to the whole stage, were all finely keyed to engender what can only be described as a low grade euphoria.
Appropriate to the theme of the night, there were angels, chariots, unicorns and colosseums supporting Kylie’s ethereal transitions and costume changes between songs. Of course, as per Kylie’s usual highly stylised shows, there was plenty of male flesh on show too, which is always a bonus.
I was pleased to see Kylie not only included top favourites and crowd pleasers like “Better The Devil You Know”, but that a lot of these well known hits were given a new flavour and twist. For example, ”Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” was given a funky rock sound.
In between songs, Kylie also brought that personal touch she is famous for, talking to the crowd, taking a request and pointing out some special fans in the audience, who she later tweeted were celebrating their 61st wedding anniversary.
There was much love for Kylie last night in Adelaide!
Some of my favourite highlights were when Kylie sat on an angel and gracefully flew over the audience, and when singing “All The Lovers” part of the stage turned into a swimming pool with three tiers of dancers, circled by even more dancers elegantly and athletically doing their thing mid-air.
The whole show was truly spectacular, both mystical and magical. Kylie never disappoints!
