A World Of Wine

I used to dream about wine when I was young.

I used to have a repetitive dream, perhaps every other month or so, about going into a place, a shop, with coloured glass all around me. I would taste some wine, and it would truly be the nectar of the gods.

That was until I actually tasted wine.

I really don't like it. I hate it. I can be pushed to drink a rose, or perhaps a white wine if it is watered down with lemonade. Red wine is a HUGE no no!

However, I now live in South Australia. Wine to South Australia, is like chocolate to the Swiss, or beer to Germany. It is massive. Everyone here drinks wine. Everyone.

So, with peer pressure, and the need to know what I am missing, I was considering taking a tour of the local vineyards and wineries.

I could even join the sophisticated elite and buy a rogar estate wine opener. These wine openers are very swish. One caught my eye, and even the handle is black granite.

But could I be a wine drinker, let alone a connoisseur? Perhaps I could. Perhaps, one day, I may even be a champion wine taster. A champion wine opener may cost a little more, but I could put it on my wedding gift list (are you reading this, Sam? Hint. Hint.) for anyone feeling generous enough.

So where do I start?

There are tours and wineries around The Barossa Valley, at Rossdale, Thebarton, everywhere. McLaren Vale is famous for fantastic wine.

I saw a tag line somewhere saying, "McLaren Vale, where the vine meets the sea." Sounds very romantic.

I will have one last look at some gorgeous rogar corkscrews, and dream of being that wistful writer who, over a glass of delicate yet stunning wine, creates characters and worlds with every stroke of his pen.

Nah, wine cons are notoriously wanky!
Besides why would you drink wine when you don't really like it when there are so many other perfectly tasty alcy beverages available!
P.S. There are awards & tags for you at my place!

Go for a foodie tour and have a sip and taste too. Cheese is better than wine. But the vibe is good. Start with the Clare Valley. Go stay for a night up there. 'Tis beautiful.

Thanks Lucy. I love cheese.

Might do that!

I know what you are saying Dar, but I know one day, if I stay with it, I will like wine.

I love coffee, and it took me a while to get over that yuckky phase. But I am glad I did.

I loved, loved, loved the Barossa Valley, but then I like red wine. I thought it was heaven with all the mom and pop vineyards. It's an acquired taste. If you don't like it by now, why force yourself?

I hate beer, and thus felt like a fish out of water when I lived in Australia in my 20's as everyone and their grandmother drank beer but me.

I do like beer...

They are putting beer in swish bottles now, for the "posh" meal experience.

I've gone in for just about every make, model and brand of booze, except wine. Stuff really doesn't do anything for me. Wouldn't get along well in Italy, Australia, France, or Central California, I wouldn't. People suck it down over there.

I think you might have to try the connoisseur thing, Star Child. It's my experience that the more one tries something, the better one likes it (with the exclusion of getting a driver's license, that is). Give it a shot. You'll give yourself yet another leg up on all the wallflowers at parties. It's a skill worth having.

Plus you can come to my bar and be the resident vino expert.
