I have heard that Adelaide is suffering a brain drain.
Apparently a mass exodus of those talented and driven academics and business minded individuals, began in the 1990's.
With Adelaide being a smaller city, the theory goes that there are simply not as many opportunities for people to achieve their goals and aspirations. These people, then, travel interstate and internationally, in order to make their lives what they want.
This brain drain can still be felt nowadays, which may be a factor in my having the opportunity to emigrate here. Many positions are proving difficult to fill with native Australians.
I am not sure this "brain drain" theory is very kind to those who choose to work and live in South Australia. To me, it seems implicit, in the way some people refer to Adelaide, that it is a small city with a small town attitude, and that Adelaide has more than it's fair share of "bumpkins".
Yes, of course there are "bumpkins", but every city and town has them. I would be the first to defend Adelaide, and rather than say it had a small town attitude, I would choose to see that the people here are simply very relaxed about life. That isn't a bad thing. Is it?
Well, after tonight, I would like to suggest Pizza Hut has a brain drain.

When did it start? Who knows?!
Where will it lead? Who knows?!
This is what happened. Sam and I decided to try Pizza Hut tonight. Domino's is more popular here in Adelaide, but in the UK Pizza Hut is dominant and superior. So we gave it a shot.
The boy serving us seemed pleasant enough, but he just wasn't switched on.
Sam had ordered garlic bread, and then mid-order, had requested if it could come with cheese melted over it.
The
He laughed, oddly, like something from that old show Beavis and Butthead. He tinkered around, looking for...something, to tell him if garlic bread could come with cheese. He went behind the scenes and came back, still looking around.
Meanwhile, Sam had spotted a promotional sign, with cheesy garlic bread.
Oh no, you see, we had got it all wrong, ladies and gentlemen. Of course we could have cheesy garlic bread, as this was on the menu. But, having garlic bread with cheese, was not on the menu.
So we now understood his confusion. We suggested he cancel the garlic bread, and not worry about the cheese, and we ordered cheesy garlic bread instead.
I am exhausted thinking about our exchange.
Then, we ordered an Italian Chicken pizza. We were informed it was $9.95, but, because there was chicken on it, there was an extra charge of $2.50.
So, an Italian Chicken pizza costs $9.95, but because there is chicken on it, it costs extra...
I think something has been lost in the translation. Perhaps my Scottish brain malfunctioned when I thought I was paying more than I should. Us Scots are miserly, you know.
I really am exhausted.
Then, we added a bottle of Pepsi to the order.
We asked for this at the time as we were both thirsty.
15 minutes later, when the order was ready, the young man tried to give us another bottle of Pepsi.
We were sipping from the first bottle when he tried to give us the second one.
We were honest and explained we had the Pepsi already.
He was pleasant, but not very sharp. Perhaps he was tired and had had a long day. Or perhaps the Pizza Hut brain drain has affected him.
I would like to add, the pizza and cheesy garlic bread were really delicious.
I think Pizza Hut is better than Domino's, whereever I go.

I've never eaten at either on of those establishments but, don't they typically hire teens at a low level pay? Not that is should matter but most of the time it does. Why would you think that chicken automatically come on the Italian chicken Pizza?...silly ~ You guys have a wonderful weekend.
tootles,
bunny
I know Bunny! We were pretty slow tonight ourselves. DOH!
I'll take the pizza idea...I hate to cook on Fridays.
Mary
David, did you go to an actual Pizza Hut Restuarant (sit down one?) Or a takeaway? That makes me tired just reading it.
The brain drain is returning by the way. We skipped to 'the big smoke' of Sydney Town to do the aspirational moeny earning rat race goal achieving thing. Then we got better and returned to sunny old Adelaide.....
That is hilarious! I'll have to look online at our local Pizza Hut and see if the Italian Chicken pizza cost extra for the chicken. LOL.
Ah, imagine how it is when not just one city, but a whole country is experiencing a brain drain, like in my homecountry of Serbia :(( Pretty much everybody is seeking a chance for a better life somewhere in the West.
Especially in recent times, I suppose, with the global recession.
But I know some countries have ongoing poverty and limited opportunity.
I was speaking to a Polish man a few months ago. In his home country he is an electrical engineer, but gets paid more in Scotland as a carer, on minimum wage.
Even here in Oz, I met a man who was from India. He is a doctor, but is working here as a cleaner, until he gets his paperwork sorted out. And he isn't earning that much less!
yes, that exactly the case. I'm a professor of English lg and literature, and a literary translator, but here in my homecountry, even with all the work, effort and love put into everything I do, I probably earn less money then people who work in the West and have just finished a secondary school. That's why the brain drain happens. People realize the life is short, and decide to find their little piece of happiness somewhere where they will be rewarded for their good work.
