Okay, perhaps I can't speak for all bloggers, but I can speak for myself (and I'm not too dissimilar to the rest of you out there, honest!).
Now, please bear with me. I wrote this post in my head, while having a shower. So I have spent the last ten minutes trying hard to recall the wonderfully worded prose I so artistically composed while lathering shampoo into my scalp.
I must get a shower-compatible dictaphone at some point!
Regular visitors to "Views" may have (hopefully have!) noticed yet more tweaks and changes to my blog.
On Wednesday I removed the third column, along with what I now consider irrelevant bloggy clutter. For example, I had a list of posts that I thought people would enjoy. I see this now as duplication, as I already have a widget at the bottom of my blog listing the most viewed posts, as well as a "Link Within" widget at the end of each post, which suggests others which may be of interest. So my adding a list of posts, in addition to these widgets added no value to "Views".
I have also tweaked the width of the two remaining columns, as well as font size and colour.
I'm happy with the look and feel of my blog at the moment, but I doubt my contentment will last for very long. I have made many modifications to my blog design, and, as well as having a unique feel and look, I think my blog has really benefited, in terms of accessibility, versatility and functionality.
Why, then, is it that bloggers are rarely satisfied with their blog design? In the blogger realm, we hear regularly that content (rightly so) is King. Blog design, then, must be Queen! The Queen supports and compliments the King, and often makes him look good.
And looking good is important. Here is why I think bloggers are often making changes to their blog templates.
Blogging Is An Art
Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, but who can honestly say it wouldn't be lovely to be pretty? Well, your blog deserves to be pretty too!
Bloggers are creative and artistic. It's true. This truth may manifest in different ways, but all people who choose to write via the medium of blogs are expressing themselves and conveying their passions and interests.
Blogs often challenge, fulfil a need, create opportunity for thought & discussion and engender emotions & reactions in people. This is the essence of art in any form.
And in keeping with all that is art, bloggers are driven to ensure their blogs not only look nice, but deliver in terms of personifying who they are, as people and as bloggers.
Evolution
As with all living organisms on Earth, blogs are also subject to evolution.
They are dynamic and fluid.
If they want to survive, blogs will be versatile and those who produce them will be adaptable.
With advances in technology and software being made at current rates, bloggers must be adaptable, there really is no other option. Up-skilling has become second nature to us savvy, independent producers and publishers of original Internet-based content. There is always something new to try in the world of blogging.
Whether you use blogger or wordpress, whether you utilise widgets or snippets of carefully placed HTML, and whether or not you make full use of social media, if you are a blogger, you are the pinnacle of evolutionary advancement. If not, you simply wouldn't be able to successfully blog in our current climate of Web.2 orientated living.
What else keeps a blog design evolving? Fear! Fear of missing out, of not trying something new and fresh. Fear of not giving your blog the best chance in what can be a tough world.
Maintaining Interest
Even for blogs who have loyal readers, it can be pleasant for those same people if bloggers mix things up a bit.
If your blog design never changes, your readers may feel comfortable and safe, knowing what to always expect...But safe is boring!
Making changes for the sake of making changes doesn't help anyone, but if a blog design is altered with some thought, it can be of great benefit to a visitor to your blog. If a new design can add useful functionality, or simply makes it easier to read the text, then do it! Your readers will appreciate it and it will help keep their interest.
Pride and Perfectionism
Most bloggers are perfectionists, and I suppose having your writing on show to all and sundry has a little to do with bloggers being hyper-aware of how their worked is being received. We are a proud people, we bloggers, and it would be awful to think our work was not being showcased to an acceptable and achievable standard.
Bloggers, never being fully satisfied with our blog design, hope (even unconsciously) to grab the reader's attention instantly and create a hunger for our work that can't be sated.
Trying our best, consistantly, drives us to try and improve our blog design wherever possible.
There is always room for improvement!
Countless themes and template combinations, along with endless tutorials available online, as well as professional blog designers available for hire around the world, mean there is no limit to how your blog can look and function.
So if you have a blog, consider tweaking and giving your baby a make-over. It can be fun, and rewarding, for you and your readers.

We do it because we can!!!
Actually a great many readers never actually see our blogs because they use Google Reader and only see our posts and not our sidebars etc.
I still change things around. I like it and I learn more when I do it.
It's a learning curve for us all, Lori. I think that's why I love it too.
